What is the differences between Studio 2015 Starter, Studio 2015 Freelance and Studio 2015 Professional?

SDL Trados Studio is available in three different versions: Starter, Freelance and Professional. The reason behind having separate versions is that freelance translators do not usually require all the functionality within the full Professional license.

View the comparison table to see the different functionality between the different versions.

What are the system requirements for SDL Trados Studio 2015 Freelance?

SDL Trados Studio supports Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 (beta). As a minimum requirement, we recommend an Intel or compatible CPU-based computer with 2 GB RAM and a screen resolution of 1280x1024. For optimum performance, we recommend 4 GB RAM and a recent Intel or compatible CPU. Please note that SDL Trados Studio 2015 no longer supports Microsoft Windows XP.

Can I work with my SDL Trados Studio 2015 Freelance license on a network?

SDL Trados Studio 2015 Freelance will work on a work group based network (such as a home wireless network), but cannot be used on domain-based networks. If you wish to work on both work group and domain-based networks, then you will need to purchase SDL Trados Studio Professional.

  • A work group based network (also known as a 'peer-to-peer' network) is two or more computers that are networked together. No one machine is in charge, and security and other settings have to be made on each individual computer.
  • A domain-based network is where networked computers (either servers or clients) have a hierarchy. Security settings are determined on the domain controllers (servers) and each machine (client) is authenticated by a server when logging on.

Can I have SDL Trados Studio 2014 network license on the same server as the SDL Trados Studio 2015 network license?
No, each license would need to have its own SDL License Server Manager installed on separate machines.

What is the difference between SDL Trados Studio 2015 Freelance and the Freelance Plus version and on how many PCs can I use my Freelance version on?

The SDL Trados Studio 2015 Freelance license allows you to activate the license on one PC, if you wish to activate your license on a second PC, for example a laptop, you will need to purchase or upgrade to the SDL Trados Studio 2015 Freelance Plus version. The additional PC activation is the only difference between the two versions.

Can I upgrade to SDL Trados Studio 2015 from older version(s) of the software?
Until 30th September 2015: You can upgrade from Studio 2009, 2011 and 2014.
After 30th September 2015: You will be able to upgrade from Studio 2011 and Studio 2014. The upgrade path from Studio 2009 will be closed.

Note: SDL Trados Studio Freelance Edition users only

Can I use my old translation memory and terminology in SDL Trados Studio 2015 Freelance?

You will still be able to save TTX files which can be used to update legacy translation memories (which are how a good majority of our users update their final TMs). You will also be able to export the new translation memory format into a TMX file format, which can then be imported into older versions of SDL Trados.

Please also note that you must be using SDL MultiTerm Extract 2015 to extract and add terminology to SDL MultiTerm Desktop 2015.
