What is SDL Trados Studio?

SDL Trados Studio 2009 combined the best features of both Trados and SDLX in one integrated environment for all your translation, review and project management needs. SDL Trados Studio 2011 is the latest version with innovative features and a new open platform, designed to enhance translation speed and maximize efficiency throughout the translation supply chain. Studio 2011 not only further enhances the translation aspect, but completely transforms the review tasks associated with any translation project.

Why has SDL developed SDL Trados Studio?

SDL Trados Studio, is not only the best of Trados and SDLX, it is the next generation translation memory software which will revolutionize the way people work. This is the culmination of over 25 years translation software expertise and $100 million investment in R&D. Our user based survey has already reported between 20% to 30% increase in translation efficiency.

Why should I upgrade?

Upgrading to the latest version, SDL Trados Studio 2011, ensures you maintain the highest level of client compatibility as well as gaining access to a host of new features to significantly increase your translation speed, including:

  1. New RevleX™ translation memory engine will save you enormous amounts of time with features such as Context Match and multiple TM lookup
  2. AutoSuggest™ accelerates translation editing through ground-breaking predictive text functionality - a 'must-use' feature
  3. Real-time Preview – check the final look of your document as you translate
  4. QuickPlace™ feature allows you to quickly apply text formatting, tags, placeables and variables
  5. 25 years of filter development and over $100 million invested in R&D provides the most comprehensive framework including new filters for PDF, XML and Adobe® FrameMaker® and InDesign®, allowing you to work on even more file formats
  6. Faster project management setup and real-time quality assurance checks increase accuracy and save time
  7. SDL is committed to open standards. Studio 2011 makes extensive use of industry standards which enable easier sharing of files, TMs and termbases between tools that also support XLIFF (a file format for translation), TMX (for translation memories) and now even TBX (for terminology databases)
  8. You asked, we listened – new filter for PDF, so that you can accept a project when the original source files are not available
  9. Choose how you work with translation memories, from desktop to large enterprise, using the 'elastic scalability' of the new platform
  10. SDL OpenExchange - extend and customize SDL Trados Studio by downloading free and paid applications, integrate it with other systems or start developing your own apps.
Is SDL Trados Studio compatible with previous versions?

Yes of course! SDL Trados Studio 2011 is compatible with SDL Trados Studio 2009. Furthermore SDL Trados Studio 2011 will enable you to open TTX, ITD files and old Trados Word bilingual files as well as use translation memories from older versions of SDL Trados. It also features support for industry standards such as TMX (for translation memories), TBX (for terminology databases) and also XLIFF (as a file format for translation).

Can you save old translation memory formats within SDL Trados Studio?

You will still be able to save TTX files which can be used to update old translation memories (which is how a good majority of our users update their final TMs). You will also be able to export the new translation memory format into a TMX file format, which can then be imported into older versions of SDL Trados.

I heard that TagEditor and Word will no longer be offered as a translation environment?

When you see the new and integrated translation environment within SDL Trados, which will enable you to translate up to 20% faster*, you will be amazed!

The integrated translation environment within SDL Trados Studio is jam-packed with features that will make you translate faster, more efficiently and are easy to use:

The new product makes extensive use of industry standards which enable easier sharing of files, TMs and termbases between tools that also support XLIFF (a file format for translation), TMX (for translation memories) and now even TBX (for terminology databases)
  8. You asked, we listened – new filter for PDF, so that you can accept a project when the original source files are not available

With new features such as these, TagEditor and the Word interface will be a thing of the past!

Additionally, we provide exciting programmes such as SDL OpenExchange and SDL Certification as well as offering a number of free educational opportunities to make the most of our software such as webinars and roadshows.

Can I work with my SDL Trados Studio Freelance license on a network?

SDL Trados Studio Freelance will work on a workgroup-based network (such as a home wireless network), but cannot be used on domain-based networks. If you wish to work on both workgroup and domain-based networks, then you will need to purchase SDL Trados Studio Professional.

A workgroup-based network (also known as a 'peer-to-peer' network) is two or more computers that are networked together. No one machine is in charge, and security and other settings have to be made on each individual computer.

A domain-based network is where networked computers (either servers or clients) have a hierarchy. Security settings are determined on the domain controllers (servers) and each machine (client) is authenticated by a server when logging on.

What are the differences between the Freelance and Professional versions?

SDL Trados Studio is available in three different versions: Starter, Freelance and Professional. The reason behind having separate versions is that freelance translators do not usually require all the functionality within the full Professional license.

The additional features in the Professional version include:

  • Ability to work on a network: Our Professional version is network enabled and can be used on a domain controlled network.
  • AutoSuggest creation: Dictionary creation with the revolutionary new AutoSuggest feature only exists within the Professional version. The Freelance version will enable translators to open and use AutoSuggest dictionaries, but they will not be able to create them unless they purchase the AutoSuggest Creator add-on.
  • Automated project preparation and distribution through SDL Package technology: Create and distribute projects with SDL Package technology - you can only open and return packages in the Freelance version.
Please note that it is possible to create projects in the Freelance version, but the SDL Package technology and customized task sequencing are available only in the Professional version.
  • Unlimited language support: Work with as many languages as you want - the Freelance version supports up to 5 languages (which are selected upon installation).
  • SDL PerfectMatch 2.0: Create PerfectMatches (in-context 100% matches) by leveraging your previously translated bilingual files. Users on the Freelance edition will be able to use PerfectMatch, but not create them.
How much does SDL Trados Studio cost?

SDL Trados Studio is now available to buy directly online. You can purchase your new license by visiting our online shop or contact us for more information.

On how many PCs can I use my Freelance version of SDL Trados Studio and can I be connected to the Internet while I work?

In the latest version of SDL Trados Studio Freelance it is possible to work within a workgroup based network such as a home wireless network. The number of PCs on which you can install or activate SDL Trados Studio Freelance is as follows:

INSTALLATIONACTIVATION

Purchasing a new full SDL Trados Studio FreelanceInstall on as many PCs as required

Activate on 1 PC at any one time. To use on multiple PCs, return the license through the license manager and activate on an alternative PC (for example a desktop and a laptop)

For the convenience of 2 activations, consider SDL Trados Studio Freelance Plus

Purchasing a new full SDL Trados Studio Freelance PlusInstall on as many PCs as requiredActivate your license on 2 PCs, for example a desktop and a laptop

What is the difference between SDL Trados Studio Freelance and SDL Trados Studio Freelance Plus?

The functionality of the 2 products is identical and both can be installed on as many PCs as required, however the difference lies within the number of activations available. With the SDL Trados Studio Freelance version the activation license can only be used on one PC. It is possible however to return your license through our online system as many times as you like and to re-activate it on a different PC immediately. Whereas, SDL Trados Studio Freelance Plus offers the convenience of a license that can be activated on 2 PCs simultaneously, for example a desktop and a laptop.

Can I have both SDL Trados Studio and SDL Trados 2007 Suite installed on the same PC?

Yes you can install both Studio and Suite on the same PC.

What is AutoSuggest Creator add-on?

With SDL Trados Studio Freelance and Freelance Plus, it is possible to use AutoSuggest when translating, provided that a dictionary is supplied to you by somebody who can create a dictionary.

To create an AutoSuggest dictionary you either need AutoSuggest Creator Add-on or SDL Trados Studio Professional. With either it is possible to create AutoSuggest dictionaries. A minimum of 25,000 translation units is required to create a dictionary.

What are the system requirements for SDL Trados Studio?

SDL Trados Studio supports Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. As a minimum requirement, we recommend a Pentium IV-based computer with 1 GB RAM and a screen resolution of 1280x1024. For optimum performance, we recommend 2 GB RAM and a more recent Pentium or compatible processor.

Please also note that you must be using SDL MultiTerm Extract 2011 to extract and add terminology to SDL MultiTerm 2011. Previous versions of SDL MultiTerm Extract will not work with SDL MultiTerm 2009.

* 80% of translators surveyed agree that SDL Trados Studio allows translators to work up to 20% faster than previous versions of SDL Trados.

Testimonials

"

After the 3 day intense SDL Trados Studio 2011 course with Katarina Bovin, I have completely and utterly fallen in love with the new way of working in Studio 2011 (compared to my old Freelance 2007), and I am eager to get started using it on a professional and daily basis. I discussed Studio 2011 with the other attendees at the course, and they all agreed that it had made a big difference to their productivity.

I agree that the biggest question mark for me when it came to upgrading to Studio 2011, was that it would be able to import my old TM's from 2007 and also be able to deliver files, clean AND unclean, compatible with 2007, to clients still using legacy 2007 versions. It was very clear to me after the Studio 2011 course, that not only is it a piece of cake to do this (easy to get a clean file and to export a TM using the converter to get a .tmx etc.), but my TM maintenance will be a lot easier! And let's not forget about the wonderful thing that tracked changes works inside the software - lovely!
