Why has SDL developed SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1?
SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1, is not only the best of Trados and SDLX, it is the next generation translation memory software which will revolutionize the way people work. This is the culmination of 25 years translation software expertize and $100 million investment in R&D. Beta testers are already reporting between 20% to 30% increase in translation efficiency.

Why should I upgrade?
Because you don't want to be left behind! SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 is a revolutionary new product based on the latest development technology. It significantly increases translation speed through an amazing range of new features, including:

Is SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 compatible with previous versions?
Yes of course! Just like SDL Trados 2006 and SDL Trados 2007, the same company has developed SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1! Although SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 is a radically innovative release, it has been developed by the same development team as the previous versions, so is therefore compatible. SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 will enable you to open TTX and ITD files, as well as use translation memories from older versions of SDL Trados. It also features support for industry standards such as TMX (for translation memories), TBX (for terminology databases) and also XLIFF (as a file format for translation).

I heard that you cannot save old translation memory formats within SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1?
You will still be able to save TTX files which can be used to update old translation memories (which is how a good majority of our users update their final TMs). You will also be able to export the new translation memory format into a TMX file format, which can then be imported into older versions of SDL Trados.

I heard that TagEditor and Word will no longer be offered as a translation environment?
When you see the new and integrated translation environment within SDL Trados 2009 SP1, which will enable you to translate up to 30% faster, you will be amazed!

The integrated translation environment within SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 is jam-packed with features that will make you translate faster, more efficiently and are easy to use:

  1. New RevleX™ translation memory engine will save you enormous amounts of time with features such as Context Match and multiple TM lookup
  2. AutoSuggest accelerates translation editing through ground-breaking predictive text functionality - a 'must-use' feature
  3. Real-time Preview – check the final look of your document as you translate
  4. QuickPlace™ feature allows you to quickly apply text formatting, tags, placeables and variables
  5. 25 years of filter development and over $100 million invested in R&D provides the most comprehensive framework including new filters for PDF, XML and Adobe® FrameMaker® and InDesign®, allowing you to work on even more file formats
  6. Faster project management setup and real-time quality assurance checks increase accuracy and save time
  7. SDL is committed to open standards. The new product makes extensive use of industry standards which enable easier sharing of files, TMs and termbases between tools that also support XLIFF (a file format for translation), TMX (for translation memories) and now even TBX (for terminology databases)
  8. You asked, we listened – new filter for PDF, so that you can accept a project when the original source files are not available
  9. Choose how you work with translation memories, from desktop to large enterprise, using the ‘elastic scalability’ of the new platform
  10. Your feedback, your product: Over 80 ideas incorporated from ideas.sdltrados.com, where users can suggest and vote on what they would like included in future releases

With new features such as these, TagEditor and the Word interface will be a thing of the past!

Why is there an increase in upgrade costs?
The majority of our software revenue is ploughed straight back into research and development. We have spent over $100 million to make sure that our users have the best translation technology possible. SDL is a profitable and stable company that you can rely upon for years to come. Our technology will provide you with a very strong return on investment, which can be quickly repaid through the additional productivity that it brings.

Why should I not buy a cheaper product?
Due to our huge investment into research and development (over $100 million), we can be sure of providing the best translation solution possible. It is highly unlikely that a cheaper product has had the same amount of research and development put into it!

SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 also has the additional advantage of compatibility with the largest translation supply chain in the world, as well as the most extensive list of file filter support. If you want to be assured that you are as compatible as possible with what the industry has standardized on, SDL Trados Studio is your best choice. Furthermore you will have peace of mind that you can work safely with clients who rely on our technology, without any risk of losing leverage and corrupting documents.

Can I work with my SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Freelance license on a network?

SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Freelance will work on a workgroup-based network (such as a home wireless network), but cannot be used on domain-based networks. If you wish to work on both workgroup and domain-based networks, then you will need to purchase SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Professional.

A workgroup-based network (also known as a 'peer-to-peer' network) is two or more computers that are networked together. No one machine is in charge, and security and other settings have to be made on each individual computer.

A domain-based network is where the networked computers (either servers or clients) have a hierarchy. Security settings are determined on the domain controllers (servers) and each machine (client) is authenticated by a server when logging on.

What are the differences between the Freelance and Professional version?
SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 is available in two different versions, Freelance and Professional. The reason behind having separate versions is that freelance translators do not usually require all the functionality within the full Professional license.

The additional features in the Professional version include:

  • Ability to work on a network: Our Professional version is network enabled and can be used on a domain controlled network.
  • AutoSuggest creation: Dictionary creation with the revolutionary new AutoSuggest feature only exists within the Professional version. The Freelance version will enable translators to open and use AutoSuggest dictionaries, but they will not be able to create them.
  • Automated project preparation and distribution through SDL Package technology: Create and distribute projects with SDL Package technology - you can only open and return packages in the Freelance version.
Please note that it is possible to create projects in the Freelance version, but the SDL Package technology and customized task sequencing are available only in the Professional version.
  • Unlimited language support: Work with as many languages as you want - the Freelance version supports up to 5 languages (which are selected upon installation)
  • SDL PerfectMatch: Create PerfectMatches (in-context 100% matches) by leveraging your previously translated bilingual files. The SDL PerfectMatch component of SDL Trados 2007 Suite will still be available for this purpose. Users on the Freelance edition will be able to use PerfectMatches, but not create them.

So how much does SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 cost and when will it be available?
SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 is now available to buy directly online. You can purchase your new license by visiting our online shop or contact us for more information.

On how many PCs can I use my freelancer version of SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 and can I be connected to the Internet while I work?
In the latest version of SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Freelance some network restrictions have been lifted and it will be easier to work within a workgroup based network such as a home wireless network. The number of PCs on which you can install or activate SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Freelance is as follows:

INSTALLATIONACTIVATION
Upgrading an existing SDL Trados licenseInstall on as many PCs as requiredActivate your license on 2 PCs
Purchasing a new full SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 licenseInstall on as many PCs as required

Activate on 1 PC at any one time. To use on multiple PCs, return the license through the license manager and activate on an alternative PC (for exmaple a desktop and a laptop)

For the convenience of 2 activations, consider SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Plus

Purchasing a new full SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Plus licenseInstall on as many PCs as requiredActivate your license on 2 PCs, for example a desktop and a laptop

What is the difference between SDL Trados Studio 2009 and SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Plus Freelance?
The functionality of the 2 products is identical and both can be installed on as many PCs as required, however the difference lies within the number of activations available. With the SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 version the activation license can only be used on one PC. It is possible however to return your license through our online system as many time as you like and to re-activate it on a different PC immediately. Whereas, SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Plus offers the convenience of a license that can be activated on 2 PCs simultaneously, for example a desktop and a laptop.

If you are upgrading an existing SDL Trados license you will automatically receive 2 activations licenses.

Can I have installed on the same PC both SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 and SDL Trados 2007 Suite?
Of course, this is possible. Infact SDL Trados 2007 Suite is also included within SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 as a complimentary component.

What is AutoSuggest Creator add-on?
With SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Freelance and Freelance Plus, it is possible to use AutoSuggest when translating, provided that a dictionary is supplied to you by somebody who can create a dictionary.
To create an AutoSuggest dictionary you either need AutoSuggest Creator Add-on or a SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP1 Professional. With either it is possible to create AutoSuggest dictionaries.

Testimonials

Read what our early adopters are saying about SDL Trados Studio 2009

"When I heard that SDL Trados announced AutoSuggest for their upcoming version I was immediately intrigued, because in fact this was a feature I had searched for online, looking for third party solutions and even Open source – only to be gravely disappointed every time.

Imagine being able to rapidly insert the word that you are starting to type, similar to the way SMS text messaging works. Only better. This is what I wanted, but it started to look like a pipe dream. Then SDL released it, from within SDL Trados!

It only took about five minutes after the release until I had bought and downloaded my copy. So was it as good as I thought? Nope, it was better! Not only does it insert the word you begin to type, it does so relative to the context. So when I translate a poker website I might get "poker player" when I start typing "po", instead of "point of sale register", which I might get in another job about a cash registry.
Creating the Dictionaries was a breeze, I just selected a Translation memory and hit a button - done! This will save time, and the saying "time is money" is a hard fact in this business.

I will be able to say yes to  more jobs. And this was only one feature, the rest of new Trados Studio 2009 seems to be a huge upgrade as well, with everything tidily in one place, no more separate programs and windows. Well done!"

Markus Wahlgren, translator  http://www.pazappa.com/

"I think the major innovation in SDL Trados Studio 2009 is its level of integration. This goes well beyond the merging of SDLX and Trados, which in itself is the achievement of a long-time ambition. The editing environment in Studio eliminates the need for separate applications such as Workbench and Tageditor.

It also solves the recurring debate on whether to translate doc files in Word or Tageditor, by making them both obsolete. And crucially, it redefines the technology pioneered in SDL Synergy as an all-emcompassing yet non-intrusive hub, since you can tailor how much or how little SDL Trados Studio does for you to each separate project."

Nick Peris, Localisation Engineer and writer at http://localizationlocalisation.wordpress.com/

"I am very happy I upgraded to SDL Trados Studio 2009 as it has so many wonderful features. And at $160, it was a very reasonable purchase considering I received an entirely new product as well as SDL Trados 2007 Suite"

Edric Barbosa Filho - Brazilian technical translator

"SDL Trados Studio 2009 has the potential to become real hit. Most translators simply want to concentrate on the translation without being/having to become a software expert. With SDL Trados Studio 2009 this is very easily manageable"

Jerzy Czopik, freelance translator
